Лот 1216 Gorgeous Red Gem 1914-D Lincoln Cent First Auction Appearance 1914-D Lincoln Cent. MS-65 RD (PCGS). Lovely autumn orange surfaces are exceptionally lustrous in an example of the key date, conditionally challenging 1914-D Lincoln cent. Sharply struck and smooth, as well, this important coin would serve as a highlight in the finest specialized collection. Struck in Denver at a time when the novelty of the new Lincoln cent had long since worn off, few collectors intentionally saved the 1914-D in Mint State. Its mintage of just under 1.2 million pieces is the third lowest in the series behind just the 1909-S VDB and 1931-S issues, but its importance in Gem condition overshadows any date in the design type, especially at MS-63 or finer -- and "or finer" is only infrequently available to today's collectors for the 1914-D. This is an uncommonly marvelous example, luminous with a mix of pumpkin-orange, brick-red, violet, magenta, and mahogany hues on each side, a classic Red and Brown appearance. The lines of the wheat ears are sharp and the details of the portrait are above-average. Add in a notable lack of marks and the overall eye appeal is amazing. Only 484,000 were minted (PCGS # 2428) Victor David Brenner (born Viktoras Baranauskas; June 12, 1871 - April 5, 1924) was a Litvak-American sculptor, engraver, and medalist known primarily as the designer of the United States Lincoln Cent. Brenner was born in iauliai, Lithuania. His name at birth was Viktoras Baranauskas, but he changed the name to Victor David Brenner, because this made it easier to obtain American citizenship.He emigrated to the United States in 1890, living mostly in the New York City area. When Brenner arrived in America, he had little more to fall back upon except the trade taught him by his father -- gem and seal engraving.
