Лот 33263. Victoria gold Proof "Una and the Lion" 5 Pounds 1839 PR62+ Ultra Cameo NGC, KM742, S-3851, Fr-386, W&R-279 (R2), Marsh-F26 (R2). Medal alignment. Front fillet five scrolls, rear nine leaves. By William Wyon, lettered edge. Struck only two years into Queen Victoria's reign, this iconic piece narrates a symbol drawn from Edmund Spenser's 16th-century epic, "The Faerie Queene", with Una representing Truth and the lion symbolizing the full might of England. As a highly coveted and elusive issue, the awe-inspiring execution of this design offers an unrivaled example of numismatic mastery by 19th century Royal Mint Chief Engraver, William Wyon. The coin's obverse possesses a youthful Queen Victoria, her portrait exuding an aura capturing her nascent reign and hopeful future. It is the delicate intricacies that truly impress - the detailed rendering of her youthful features, the gentle fall of her hair secured in a neat bun, complemented by the impressively replicated pattern in the royal diadem. On the reverse, the iconic image of Una leading the lion imbues this coin with its signature character. A glance at the elegance of Una's flowing robe with the lifelike allure of the lion only fortifies its esteemed renown. One of the most notable characteristics is its Ultra Cameo designation, offering a stunning contrast between the polished, mirror-like golden fields and the frosty-champagne finish of the devices. This level of juxtaposition, complemented by sharp lines and masterful engraving, creates a truly exquisite Victorian-era piece. NGC bestowed its coveted + designation on this particular example, acknowledging the near-Choice appearance of the well-struck up, matte-like devices that exhibit virtually no wear. Any significant Proof contrast, as seen here, will inevitably disclose the most minute flaws, which in this case manifests in the form of trivial hairlines, visible under magnification. A deep goldenrod patina breezes across the massive planchet, lending a vintage aura to Wyon's masterpiece. This is an unconditionally spectacular example of one of numismatics great trophies.
