Lot 41194 Stunning Early 20th Century Italian Gold Rarity ITALY. 100 Lire, 1905-R. Vittorio Emanuele III (1900-46). NGC MS-62. Pagani-639; Gigante-2; Mont-03; KM-39. RARE . Two year issue, with a mintage of 1,012 pieces and one of the most desirable Italian gold type coins from the post-unification period. Tied with three other examples at NGC and PCGS for finest graded of the date. Like most world central banks in the very early twentieth century, Italy took advantage of the sharp increase in world gold production following the introduction by gold miners of the cyanide leach process, which greatly enhanced gold reclamation. Gold was accumulated by Banca D'Italia and used to augment reserves, and while many of the outstanding bonds (held primarily by French and British banks) were redeemed, very little of the gold found its way into coinage. Today, nearly all of the Italian gold issues from this period are highly prized, and the 1903 and 1905 Italian 100 Lire coins are considered the most desirable of them all. The piece offered here is no exception, representing perhaps the most desirable example of all 1905 dated pieces extant. A straight graded coin with none of the problems that tend to plague the issue, totally free of copper spotting or damage to the razor sharp and extremely fragile rims. Nearly proof-like fields, especially on the reverse, with bright frosty matte luster on the devices. The strike is tremendous, with every strand of the king's hair fully defined, and with a reverse eagle that seemingly levitates above the surface of the mirrored fields. A coin missing from most collections of Italian gold, the opportunity offered here is one to be capitalized upon. Estimate: $16,000 - $20,000. NGC MS-62.
