Lot 4557 1898-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. A breathtakingly beautiful example that is solidly in the near-Gem category and handsome enough to suggest an even higher grade. Bathed in frosty rose-gold luster, both sides are silky smooth in appearance and sharply struck throughout the design. The San Francisco Mint produced 2,575,175 double eagles in 1898, up more than 1.1 million pieces over the previous year's production at the West Coast facility. Face value for this generous mintage amounted to $51,503,500. Much of this coinage found its way overseas in banking and business transactions. We estimate as many as 30,000 to 50,000 or more Mint State examples exist of this plentiful issue, many of which are from European bank hoards that came to light over the last several decades. Some scattered contact marks are mostly on the obverse, as usual. This coin is certainly a high-end MS-62. Commentary: The zenith of the Klondike Gold Rush was in 1898. Two years earlier just 500 or so people had inhabited Dawson City at the convergence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers. By late summer 1898 the population had swollen to nearly 30,000, with boarding houses, hotels, saloons, and other buildings in abundance. Q. The fields are uncommonly unabraded for the MS64 level, and faint marks near the chin are all that limit the grade. The strike is bold throughout. Full glowing mint luster, the color of sunset, with sleek fields and bold relief; close to gem level and among the prettier 1898-S twenties around. San Francisco Mint luster has a satiny quality to it. Philadelphia Mint frost is just that, frosty. Pop 913; 100 in 65; 1 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9034) . Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,400.

Lot 1076 $20 Gold 1898-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-65. Although a common date in lower grades of mint state, in full gem condtion as seen here, this date is quite rare. NGC has graded 58 this high, and just 2 are graded higher by that service, while PCGS reports only 18 this high, with a single coin graded higher. Note that the devices are fully struck by the dies, and the coin boasts mint fresh luster throughout. A few tiny ticks from handling, including one small mark on her chin. As close to perfection as one can hope to find. Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
