With more than 6 million double eagles struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1904, there was no need to make many more in 1905. Only 58,919 coins were struck, most with indifferent attention to quality. This high-end near-Gem survivor must have benefited from fresh dies and good fortune. Satiny surfaces retain pillowy luster throughout both sides, with a paucity of marks and a decent strike. This rare "late date" is often ignored at the Mint State level and is virtually nonexistent any finer than Choice Uncirculated. The present coin is tied with three others as the finest-certified at PCGS. Los 6214 1904 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS). Endearing pinkish-orange surfaces are originally and uncommonly well preserved for this conditionally challenging double eagle design type. Fully struck with intricate detail throughout the design. By the early 20th century gold coins no longer actively circulated within the United States, except for limited use on the West Coast, which needs were easily met by the San Francisco Mint. As such, it seems that most examples of this Philadelphia Mint issue were used in international commerce, generally in the form of shipment to England or France. Hundreds of thousands of these coins returned to the United States beginning after World War II, and the 1904 is the most available issue of its type in Mint State. At the Gem Uncirculated level, as here, the 1904 is scarce and enjoys particularly strong demand for inclusion in high grade type and date sets.
