For wear, an exceptionally nicely preserved example of this KEY DATE rarity. Clear portrait and sharp lion pulled quadriga with attractive bright luster. Los 41200 ITALY. 50 Centesimi, 1924-R. NGC MS-62. KM-61.1; Mont-241; Gig-168. Plain edge. Population of 3 with 7 finer at NGC and PCGS. Catalog value of $4,000 in Krause in MS60. Interestingly enough, the edge treatment is less important than the overall preservation. By a small margin the coin offered here is the more desirable type, though the reeded edge variety is nearly as valuable at this level. In 1924 the Italian economy had improved significantly over what it had been just 5 years earlier when Italy faced starvation immediately after the war. And as is always the case with improving economic conditions, the velocity of the money supply increased. For this reason, virtually none of the smaller nickel coins circulating at the time have been preserved in anything close to this state of preservation. While high grade circulated pieces are readily available, in mint state coins like this one are nearly impossible to find. Quite conservatively graded and with all of the design details Romagnoli intended clearly visible. A coin you won't want to miss out on. Estimate: $700 - $900. NGC MS-62.
