Losnummer 295. Good very fine, dark | GREAT BRITAIN. George III, 1760-1820. Silver Shilling, 1763. London. Northumberland. Named after the Earl of Northumberland who ordered £100 worth of shillings in 1763 to be distributed at his arrival in Dublin having been appointed Lord Lieutenant. The provenance of the silver used to strike this issue adds to its allure. A cargo of bullion was captured from the Spanish cargo ship Hermione off the coast of Portugal on the 17th May 1762, no less than 47 tonnes of treasure in total.Young laureate and draped bust right. Legend reads GEORGIVS·III·DEI·GRATIA·. / Crowned cruciform shields with central Garter star, plain angles, divided date above, legend surrounds.
