Losnummer 51815. William IV THE Maundy Set 1833. Forty-four coins are housed in a contemporary box built specifically to hold these coins. There are (3) Fourpence pieces, (4) Threepence pieces, (7) Twopence pieces, and (30) Onepence pieces. The total face value of these coins is 68 Pence, which is consistent with the tradition by which the King of England would present 1d for each year of his life to a number of poor people selected by the Lord High Almoner of England. William IV was born Aug 21, 1765, and would have been 68 years old on Maundy Thursday in 1833. This set is accompanied by a 3" x 1.25" contemporary parchment label reading in a lovely calligraphic hand "Maunday(sic) Money. These Coins were presented to Mrs. Bruce of London. April 4th 1834 by command of his present Majesty". The case is 7" x 4" , rounded ends with two brass hook clasps and looks completely contemporary with the coins. The coins are toned the dark blue that one would expect from a case such as this. There is no wear on the coins, but it is possible that the coins were lightly cleaned at some time--merely adding a little charm as it shows that the coins didn't just lie around unappreciated. It is likely that Mrs. Bruce was proud of her coins and wanted to be sure they were 'nice and shiny' to show off to her friends and neighbors. This is a fascinating set and THE Maundy set to show everything we know about this service that traces its history back to the New Testament when Jesus Christ washed the feet of his Disciples.
