Come noto gli esemplari da 100 lire del 1903 e 1905; emissione detta “aquila araldica”, sono soggetti a numerosi “hairlines” nei campi all’atto della coniazione. Dei 966 esemplari coniati nel 1903 e 1012 del 1905, raramente appaiono sul mercato esem-plari con i fondi intonsi e senza tali difetti che già si manifestavano in zecca. Le 100 lire “aquila araldica” sono le ultime monete incise dal Cav. Filippo Speranza. Egli apparteneva alla vecchia scuola di maestri incisori che creavano a mano i loro punzoni senza l’utilizzo del pantografo. Vittorio Emanuele III pur lodando il lavoro di Speranza trovava le raffigurazioni araldiche fredde e monotone, lontane dai suoi ideali d’arte numismatica.
