Lote 31508. Republic platinum Pattern 5 Zlotych Dated 1928 UNC, Munich mint, 36g, KM-Pn317, Parchimowicz-P191d. A rare offering of this pattern type in platinum, handsomely produced with flashy, lustrous surfaces and sharp details to be found throughout the engraving. This type features the famous painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa (Matka Boska Czestochowska), also known as the Black Madonna, housed in the Jasna Góra monastery. A superb piece in general and one to elicit much attention from collectors of patterns and the Polish Republics. Ex. John A. Beck Collection (Abner Kreisberg 1/1975 - Lot 1503) Currently, neither NGC nor PCGS are certifying this issue in platinum due to a lack of knowledge about when it was struck. The issue was actually designed by Karl Goetz (who died in 1950) and like his many famous German issues, was made more for novelty than serious currency consideration. Though dated 1928, it is not certain it was struck in the same year.
