Lote 31297. Nicholas I Novodel "Family" 1-1/2 Roubles (10 Zlotych) 1836 AU58 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C172.2, Dav-286B, Bit-H889 (R1), cf. Sev-3181 (Very Rare; not indicated as an original or Novodel striking). Obverse signed П.У., reverse unsigned. By Paul Utkin. Obv. Bust of Nicholas I right. Rev. Bust of Empress Alexandra in the center, facing right, surrounded by busts of the Royal children with no circles. One of the monumental rarities of 19th-century Russian coinage, the so-called "Family" 1-1/2 Roubles occupies a singular position in Russian numismatics, not only for its specimen format, but also as the sole contemporary issue from Nicholas' reign to bear his portrait. Modeled off of the famous "Blessings from Heaven" taler that depicted the family of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, a copy of which was proposed by Finance Minister Krankrin, the type went through several designing stages before, unfortunately due to repeated issues with the dies cracking or shattering, it was finally abandoned. From an aesthetic perspective, the fields on this piece are Prooflike, only a few light marks noted for accuracy while doing little on the whole to distract the eye, the strike itself boldly executed upon surfaces exhibiting mottled gray toning. Close examination reveals that there is no actual circulation wear on this piece, the slightest hint of cabinet friction atop the high points of the reverse (none on the obverse) likely accounting for the certification. The diagnostic break in the die is visible on the reverse edge between 2 and 5 o'clock. On the whole a well-recognized treasure of the series and an issue that stirs excitement whenever an example appears in the marketplace.
